Reasons to love Wix if you’re a small business owner

Wix website builder is the perfect fit for small businesses.

Running a small business means you’re wearing many, many hats - all at the same time. Any tools or hacks that can save you time, money, effort or resources is a definite win!

Managing your website doesn’t have to be something on your ‘too hard’ list. We love to recommend Wix to our clients. It’s easy to build with, very cost-effective and simple for any business owner to edit.

Here are 5 reasons why so many small business owners (ourselves included!) love Wix as a website builder.

1. You don’t need to be a tech wizard

Like with any bit of tech, you need time to find your feet. Out of all of the CMS platforms we use for clients, Wix is by far the easiest to navigate. Need to update some text on your site? You don’t need a developer. You can easily find your way to the page and section that needs the edits, then simply adjust the copy and re-publish the site. The drag-and-drop tool makes adding in a new content widget straightforward, and it’s easy to undo anything if your new content goes wonky.

Will you be able to do techy bits, like integrate a third party app or conversion tracking? Probably not without the support of someone with technical skills. But you can definitely manage day-to-day needs without the need to outsource.

2. It’s budget-friendly (and we love that for you)

Wix offers a range of plans that are very affordable, starting from as low as $28 per month (NZD, so you can be a victim of the fluctuating exchange rate with the USD). A word of warning, don’t listen to the ‘free wix website’ chat. You do need a paid plan to hook up a domain that you’ve already purchased elsewhere.

Monthly subscription fees aren’t the only cost to consider. Remember that you’ll have hosting charges, a build cost and possibly apps or third party plug-ins to add to your total monthly costs. Wix is great as it offers you an inexpensive starting point to layer on your unique business needs.

3. The site can grow with you

Wix is great when you are just starting out - but it’s also powerful enough to support your business as it grows. We have supported lots of customers with Wix upgrades. Examples include moving from a ‘content’ site to one that integrates service or class bookings, an online store, payment gateways, meeting appointment functionality and even invoicing in the backend.

You can keep adding features as your business expands, without needing to start from scratch.

4. Support is on hand when you need it

The Wix community is vast! The tool is used worldwide so if you can’t track down the right answer via the Wix support team (and in general, they are very helpful and responsive), you can ask online. There are plenty of different forums filled with Wix experts who know almost every issue, bug, limitation and hack to get the best out of your website.

5. It looks good

Design matters. A professional-looking website makes your business look trustworthy and professional. Wix gives you the ability to plug and play a pre-designed template that speaks to you. Simply customise it to suit your logo and brand guidelines (like fonts, colours etc) and add imagery that sells your story. Wix has hundreds of designed templates to choose from. The hardest part is picking one so that you can get started! PS. these templates are free (not like most Shopify themes).

Wix has its limitations as a CMS, but the site can grow with you in most cases

Don’t get us wrong, there are limitations

There is no such thing as the perfect website builder. Whether you lean into Wix, love Wordpress, are a Shopify evangelist or are a first mover with RocketSpark, every platform has its limitations.

A few that we have found over the years when we think of Wix include:

  • The app library isn’t extensive (at least compared to Wordpress, Shopify etc)

  • It’s not known to be a great option if you’re an ecommerce brand

  • You can host different languages (the auto translation tool is pretty cool) but if you want to build a site that really goes after a country-specific SEO strategy, Wix probably isn’t it

  • Sometimes the responsive design to translate your desktop design to mobile can’t be trusted (always, always test and check before and after publishing!)

  • Keep your images, apps and iframes optimised and lean - we do find it’s a bit harder to keep site speed high on some Wix sites

Our final love note to Wix

You’ve got enough on your plate. Pick a CMS that is going to make your life easier, not harder. Wix takes the stress out of building and managing your website, so you can focus on doing what you actually love and where your skills are best placed. Wix is easy to use, a breeze to build and edit, and best of all - very affordable.

Try it, love it, and thank us later.
